Christina's Burtner's Art Show
Hello!
My art show is this month! Two years of painting has gone by like a stealth banshee. I have 50 oil paintings finished and ready for the opening reception which is going to be Saturday, June 28 from 5-8 pm at Kaewyn Gallery in Bothell. Attached is a flyer with all of the info; gallery address, directions, etc... My fingers are dyed, my clothes are stained and the ol' paint fumes have gone straight to my noggin, but I'm pleased as punch with how the work turned out and I can't wait to get this show on the road! I'd love to see you at the opening reception, but if you can't make it the show runs until July 29th, and I also have many of the pieces up in a slide show on my blog: www.christinaolsenburtner.blogspot.com if you want to take a sneak peak. The reception will be a celebration for the ages, there will be wine and refreshments, good friends and wall to wall art. I hope to see you!!
Cheers!
Christina

Totally Tokyo
By Matt French

Last month, I had the privilege of spending 6 days in Tokyo with the Volcom art crew. It was Daven, Hovin, & Eddie from the Volcom art Department, and Haculla, Jamie Lynn, and me....as the featured artist contingency. We were there to put on an art show, to promote the Volcomic book, on the last stop of the Volcomics tour: the Claska Gallery.

Welcome to the flower zone.
I've never had so bad of jetlag, or had as much fun in recent history. Along with the crazy days and wild nights, we were able to eat good, and shop in what is considered to be the number one shopping district in the world, the Sha"boo-yah" district of Tokyo. You may have seen a dinosaur wandering across a building there in the movie "Lost in Translation".

Entre Vu Tokyo
The whole time we were there, David, Monk, & Iceman were excellent hosts....paying for meals, insane taxis, and making sure we didn't get lost in the second largest city in the world.
Viva la Volcomics!
Lay-tor,
-Matt

VOLCOMICS ISSUE #1 - INTERNATIONAL ART SHOW AND COMIC BOOK
Volcom lauches a world-wide artshow tour and 60-page comic book in support of the biggest Volcom Featured Artist Series line ever.
The project was born from Volcom VP Creative Director Ethan Anderson's love of the underground comic movement and looked to capture its raw energy and low-fi means by creating a comic book that is authentic down to the paper stock and page count.
The comic book is over two years on the making and features legendary skateboard artists Jim Phillips and VCJ as well as some of the biggest creative contributors to skateboarding today - Michael Sieben, Todd Bratrud and Travis Millard. In addition to skate-art heavyweights the book features artists/athletes from the worlds of surfing, snowboarding and skateboarding such as Mark Appleyard, Ozzie Wright, and Jamie Lynn. There will be artists in attendance and a limited number of t-shirts and books to be given away for free at each opening reception. Volcom will be producing fifteen thousand copies of the comic for free, with worldwide distribution.
The art show series will begin May 19th at Fuse gallery in New York City and will continue through the summer with stops in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Tokyo and London. The openings will include drawings by all Holiday 2007 Volcom Featured Artists, as well as scribblings by all twenty-eight artists that contributed to the book. The book and shows are an Art Loft release being curated by Volcom Senior Graphic Artist Mike Aho.

focus on TIM ZIMMERMAN
TIM SHOOTS ALL DIGITAL PHOTOS FOR US, RIDES A FLATLAND BMX BIKE, WILL TELL YOU A THING OR TWO ABOUT COLOR CORRECTION, HANDLES ANY I.T. PROBLEMS YOU MIGHT HAVE, AND HAS 226 WORDS TO DESCRIBE LIGHT. GET THE PICTURE...

How/who/what introduced you into snowboard photography?
Well, here’s the deal: I suck at snowboarding. Once I came to that realization I figured out that I wanted to be involved in any way I could even though I’d never be a rock star shredder. I was working in custom photo labs for a few years and decided to give shooting snowboarding a try. My first inspiration came from Mark Gallup & Eric Berger’s photography in Transworld Snowboarding. I dreamed that some day I’d be able to make the kind of photos they were making then. I’ll let you know when I’m finally able! Option rep Chad Perrin was the first person to see any potential in my photography and invited me to come up to Vermont from Pennsylvania to shoot the US Open. I have to give him the credit for really encouraging me to go for it full time.
So are you making a living solely from your photography work?
There are no chrome 22’s spinning on the Dakota but yea, I’m living solely from photography.
Where do you live?
I live in a 2003 Dodge Dakota but I pay rent in Mammoth Lakes, CA.
What kind of photo equipment do you use? And what kind would you use if you could?
I use Nikon digital equipment and Apple computers. Oh yeah, Adobe basically rules my life. If I had my way I’d have a 40 megapixel 35mm digital rig with a 10-400mm f/1.2 zoom lens that weighed less than my snowboard. A fleet of G5’s maxed to the gills would be nice too.
Still vs. sequence...?
Stills, stills, stills! Most things that happen in snowboarding can be most accurately and artistically portrayed by shooting a still shot. There are times when sequences work though. Tech lines or tricks can sometimes be best served by shooting a sequence. The old, “Standing on the side of a park jump while holding the button down” crap is so played out. If you want to do that you should just buy a movie camera.
Digi vs. film...? That’s a can of worms question, but for me it’s digital all the way. There’s no look I can’t get by shooting digital.
RGB vs. CMYK...? Really Good Beer is much better than Creamy Milk Yolk Ketchup.
How many cover shots this year? Ever?
I got the cover of Snowboard Magazine this year with a photo of Kyle Clancy. I’ve had the cover of a few magazines in my time.
What Lib Tech riders did you get to shoot with this year?
This year I got to spend time with Travis Rice, Jakob Wilhelmson, Eric Jackson, Sammy Luebke & Curtis Cizek.
Who do you want to shoot with in the future?
Lando, if that bitch calls me back. Shooting an elusive Lynn method would also be wondrous.
Funnest trip this year?
That’s a hard one to nail down but I’ll have to say that filming Eric Jackson with Standard Films was truly a pleasure. Those
guys do it right.

Carl Smith

06/07 TRS art by Carl Smith
So Carl, how did you get hooked up with doing graphics for Lib Tech this year?
Jamie recommended me.
What is your art background?
I have always been involved in art. I have worked professionally since 17 & have shown fine art internationally for the past 6 years. I love art.
What was the inspiration for the art you submitted?
This piece was very characteristic of the line paintings I was doing in 2001. Life and Death was the theme.
Does it (the art) mean anything in particular?
The main element in the art is a skull with an embryo in its eye. Confronting death to see life.
Other artists you admire?
Mike Parillo, Gerhard Richter, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Cy Twombly, Alfons Mucha & many many others...
Hobbies besides art?
I am fascinated with any new locations and experiences. I surf, snowboard, and I enjoy the everyday adventure that life is with my wife (and son to be!!!).

A SNOWBOARD IS MORE THAN A SNOWBOARD

A SNOWBOARD SHOULD BE ALIVE, SEXY, BEAUTIFUL AND A LITTLE BIT EVIL, LIKE WE ALL ARE. NICK RUSSIAN’S ARTISTIC VISION OF WHAT A SACRED SNOW TOY SHOULD BE, HAS BEEN EVOLVING FOR 20 YEARS.
ARTISTS LIKE RYAN DAVIS, CARL SMITH AND MATT FRENCH HAVE JOINED NICK RUSSIAN, MIKE PARILLO, & JAMIE LYNN TO CARRY ON THE TRADITION THIS YEAR...

Trick Stick Lipstick
On Friday, Febrewary 3, a treasury of snowboard art, like has never before been assembled for public viewing, manifested itself at the Nightlight...in thirsty downtown Bellingham, Washington.
What a mouthful THAT was! Exactly...and for the rest of the weekend, people drank in the pleasured views in paint...and $2.50 Redhook pours in pint.
What began as an idea for an art show to correlate with the Legendary Mt. Baker Banked Slalom snowboard race, soon chalked up it's first strained gasp. All at once breathing freely, the show dragged it's skyborne electric wires, shackles, and chains into the basement, for a weekend of sweating, euro-mulleted gypsies and angst-ridden, art-powered frivolity.
Photos by, Gunther Jose Frank

Trick Stick Lipstick
is a metaphor for snowboard graphics.
Wandering in and out of illusions on walls,
down and around through halls.
The tempo trebling my temples,
or is it my pulse?
Exclamation, exquisite.
The brush knocked
on the corner
of signature's visit.
Flashing lights respite
tonight delights in fright.
Thoroughly afraid of what just might,
be the most definitive beauty'd blight,
of which you paid to catch sight
of the artists' hand-sleight.
Living it up to your own discretion's interventions
giving it up to be defined as mind vengeance.
can you hear the wine inside the engines?
The power to paint yourself into a corner,
to draw a crowd, to create a nuisance...
...to the point of getting the stamp of removal.

Rock the flotsam, jettison the jetsam,
You've got to stop, look, and listen.
Art on the Lam...
...inate surfaces of sandwiches and caps...
..ized just sinking, into more thinking,
when blinking lapsed...
...and my eyes closed the gap.

One more for the road:
Gone is the day
Now is the night
Evening is breathing
A whisper of flight
So I flew to a new height
And the summit above it
Only to find my plight
To plummet from it

...if you didn't make it to this show,
I hope you'll make it to the next one.
Then you'll see why we photographed it after the fact.
It was RAW!

Tender loving thanks to:
Lib Technologies, Redhook, Volcom
& also RECO: "Whatchu got on my swa-vay?"

Take care,
pee shout,
and take a peek in the Volcom Artist Gallery sometime.
el Volcomics es bueno!
